Start with the garment, not the artwork

The most common sizing mistake is to choose dimensions solely from the digital design. Artwork may look balanced on a screen but appear too large or too small once it is on fabric. Before sending a job to print, consider the garment size range, fabric type, print location and the visual weight of the design.

A bold, solid design carries more visual impact than a fine-line illustration of the same width. Similarly, a wide logo may need to be reduced to sit comfortably within a narrow chest area, while a tall design can often use more vertical space without overwhelming the garment. The transfer should look intentional from normal viewing distance, not simply fill the maximum printable area.

For commercial orders, agree the intended placement with the customer before production. This is especially valuable where a customer has supplied artwork without a mock-up, or where the same design will be applied across adult, youth and children’s garments. A single transfer size is rarely the best answer for every garment in a mixed order.

Full-back designs generally allow a little more width, commonly 28 cm to 33 cm. They also benefit from considered top spacing. If a back print begins too close to the collar, it can look cramped. As a practical check, place the garment flat and view it from a few steps away. The design should sit comfortably within the garment body, with clear breathing room around it.

Oversized prints are a stylistic choice, not simply a larger standard print. They may require a larger heat press platen, more careful alignment and an artwork layout that still reads well when it spans a substantial area. They are less forgiving on smaller sizes, so separate transfer sizes are often necessary for mixed garment runs.

Sleeves, labels and smaller locations

Sleeve transfers need careful handling because the available surface is narrow and seams can interfere with pressure. Set up the artwork at the correct print size

Once the transfer size has been agreed, build the artwork at its final physical dimensions. This prevents surprises when files are imported into RIP software or arranged on a gang sheet. The design should be supplied at an appropriate resolution for the finished size, commonly 300 dpi for detailed raster artwork.

Keep fine lettering realistic. Text that looks clear on screen may become difficult to read when reduced, especially in condensed fonts or designs with distressed effects. As a general production check, inspect the smallest letter height at actual print size before approving the artwork.

Transparent backgrounds are normally required for DTF transfers unless the design deliberately includes a coloured background shape. Also check for unwanted semi-transparent pixels, shadows or pale edges around artwork. These can produce an unintended printed effect once white ink and adhesive powder are involved.

Gang sheets can improve material efficiency, but they should not dictate poor transfer sizing. Leave enough space between designs for clean cutting and make sure individual items can still be aligned easily at the heat press. Saving a few centimetres of film is not worthwhile if it slows pressing or increases handling errors.

Test placement before committing to production

For repeat jobs, create a placement reference for each garment style and print location. This can be as simple as a written note recording transfer dimensions and measurement points. It helps operators produce consistent results, particularly when multiple people are pressing garments or an order is repeated months later.

For new designs, a paper printout at full scale is an effective low-cost test. Cut it out, place it on the garment and assess it on a hanger or worn by someone if possible. This quickly reveals whether the design is too wide, too low or too visually heavy for the intended placement.

Sizing also has a commercial impact. Larger transfers use more film, ink, powder and pressing time, while smaller designs may allow more efficient gang-sheet layouts. The goal is not always to use the largest possible transfer. It is to produce a garment that looks right, presses consistently and supports a profitable workflow.
